God's Abundant Surprise

The miraculous birth of identical quadruplets reminds us that every life is a unique and wonderful gift from God, whose generosity often exceeds our wildest plans.

You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. I praise you, because I am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works! My very self you knew.

My dear brothers and sisters, it is easy to feel weary in this world. Sometimes our plans go awry, and the burdens we carry feel heavy. But then, a story shines through the headlines that reminds us of the profound and surprising goodness of God. I was so moved to read about a mother in Brisbane, Jenitar Na’amoana, who recently gave birth to identical quadruplets. The odds, they say, were one in fifteen million. What a beautiful, startling, and overwhelming gift.

Imagine the moment of discovery, the shock turning to wonder. A family that already felt complete with four children is suddenly, miraculously, asked to make room for four more. It is a testament to the boundless and sometimes bewildering generosity of our Creator. It brings to mind the words of the Psalmist: “You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. I praise you, because I am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works! My very self you knew.” In this incredible instance, God took a single, miraculous thread of life and from it knit four distinct, unique, and unrepeatable souls: Emily, Harriet, Catherine, and Alexa. Each one known, loved, and willed into being from all eternity.

We are told the pregnancy was considered very high-risk, and yet, the mother “took everything in her stride.” What quiet courage, what deep trust that must have required. It is a modern echo of the trust our Blessed Mother showed when the angel announced a plan for her life that was utterly impossible by human standards. Mary’s questioning heart was put at ease by that simple, powerful truth: “For nothing will be impossible for God.” Faced with the impossible, this family in Brisbane chose to trust. They opened their hearts to the overwhelming gift they were given, and God has seen them through.

And how beautiful it is to see the community respond. The dedicated medical team, one of whom now shares her name with one of the babies, became part of the family’s story. The fundraiser set up by the community shows the Church, the Body of Christ, in action—people coming together to bear one another’s burdens and share in one another’s joys. This is solidarity. This is what it means to be family.

Perhaps you are not expecting quadruplets. But God’s abundant, surprising grace is at work in your life, too. He is always ready to give us more than we could ask or imagine, even if it comes in a form that upends our plans. Let the story of this family be a gentle comfort to you. Take heart in knowing that the God who wonderfully made these four little girls also knit you together in love, knows your every need, and holds you in the palm of His hand. Nothing, truly nothing, is impossible for Him.
