And There's More: Laughter in the Light of Eternity

In Jimmy Cricket's joyful passage from this life, we glimpse the Paschal victory where death yields to the unending mirth of the Kingdom.

Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?'

John 11:25-26

For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

Philippians 1:21

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me. Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 23:4 (22:4 LXX)

Dear friends, let us sit quietly for a moment with the news from across the waters: Jimmy Cricket, that beloved clown from Northern Ireland, has entered into eternity at the age of eighty, after a short illness. His family shares a tender picture—surrounded by love, laughter, and songs in his final days. Even as shadows lengthened, he cracked jokes for the NHS staff and his loved ones, embodying courage, dignity, and a positivity that inspired all around him. From his beginnings in Cookstown, leaving school at sixteen to don the Redcoat at Butlins, through the comedy clubs of the seventies and eighties, his ITV show, and BBC Radio series, he was a force for joy, making the world a sillier, brighter place. And in their farewell, his family honors his deep faith as a Papal Knight of the Catholic Church, declaring that death is not the end. With a gentle twist on his catchphrase, they affirm: 'And there's more.'

In this gentle soul's departure, we hear the echo of Christ's own words: 'I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die' (John 11:25-26). Jimmy's life, marked by mirth amid trial, reflects the saintly joy that our holy fathers knew so well. Recall St. John Chrysostom, who, even in exile and chains, preached with unquenchable fire, reminding us that the Christian heart finds delight in the Lord who turns mourning into dancing. Or think of the Desert Fathers, like Abba Poemen, who taught that the remembrance of death is not a burden but a call to wakefulness, to live each moment in the prayer of the heart: 'Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.' Jimmy's laughter to the very end whispers this truth—he walked through the valley of the shadow of death, yet feared no evil, for the Good Shepherd was with him, His rod and staff comforting (Psalm 23:4).

We feel the ache of loss, do we not? The world is indeed a far less silly place without his voice, and families everywhere know this quiet sorrow when a light fades. Yet take heart, beloved ones; our Orthodox faith, rooted in the living Tradition, bids us see beyond the veil. St. Basil the Great teaches that death is but the soul's release to behold the uncreated Light, advancing in theosis toward the likeness of God. In the liturgy we sing at every Vespers, 'O gladsome Light,' beholding Christ as the joy of the heavenly hosts. Jimmy's positivity, his unyielding humor, mirrors the saints who faced the end with songs—St. Seraphim of Sarov, radiant even in suffering, or St. Mary of Egypt, whose repentance flowered into eternal embrace. Christ’s mercy envelops not only the dying but the bereaved, drawing us into the beauty of creation as icon, where every laugh is a foretaste of the wedding feast.

Let us remember: 'For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain' (Philippians 1:21). Jimmy believed this, looking forward to eternity with hope. In our own trials, when illness shadows or joy seems distant, let the Jesus Prayer rise softly: a rhythm of the heart that binds earth to heaven. The Church's saints assure us—death swallows no one in Christ; it is swallowed up in victory. His family's words invite us all: there is more. More laughter in the bosom of Abraham, more songs with the angels, more light from the Theotokos and all the saints. Rest in this, dear ones. God's nearness is your consolation today.

Prayer

O Lord Jesus Christ, who art the Resurrection and the Life, comfort Jimmy Cricket's family and all who mourn, that they may know Thy eternal joy. Grant rest to Thy servant in the dwellings of light, and fill our hearts with the laughter of Thy Kingdom. Through the prayers of our most holy Lady Theotokos and all Thy saints, have mercy on us. Amen.
